All back safely.  What a week.  Be sure to ask our youth what they experienced when you see them, and come Sunday, July 5th for a special worship to highlight our week!  Thanks be to God, for He has richly blessed us all with a memorable experience.  Blessings, David

mission trip oh-nine pt. 2-ian

Posted by mzyfgrandy on June 25, 2009

today and yesterday were much better than the first day of work.  we were all more aware of what we were doing and what we were supposed to do which made the day go by much faster.  last night we had some pretty good pizza and dirt cake at the methodist church around the corner and then shared a very moving devotion with both our and their youth group.  It has been a wonderful mission trip so far and i have really enjoyed being able to help those in need.

Peace out yall,

Ianp.

Pastor’s Log – Day 3 (Morning)

Posted by mzyfgrandy on June 25, 2009

Good morning!  We are gathering in the fellowship hall this morning with our guide, Mr. Jim Kennedy, and a helpful soul, Mr. Brandon Greene.  We are preparing ourselves for a day to build a 16′ ramp for a woman living in downtown Fairmont.  Our goal is “to shine light upon the darkness,” as our guide Mr. Jim said to us this morning.  Praise God!

We’ve had some outstanding meals…you all know how important this is to me, personally.  Each meal, four youth have assisted Mr. Mike and Mrs. Dawn in the kitchen, preparing, serving and cleaning up after every meal.  So not only are the youth involved with daily work on the mission site, but they are also serving at our host site.  What a wonderful attitude they have all embodied throughout the week.

Looking forward to our day together.  Blessings, David

Pastor’s Log – Day 3

Posted by mzyfgrandy on June 25, 2009

Amazing.  That’s what God’s up to in Robeson County.  During our time of devotion tonight with our new friends at Trinity UMC in Fairmont, we studied 1 Peter, digging into all five chapters with small groups as they reflected on passages and thought about what had happened over the course of the past two days of mission.  We talked about being set apart as a people and how important this is in our understanding of the call God places upon each one of us.  We talked about how being set apart is what holy is all about.

It’s been work, no doubt.  I’ve heard folks say out loud, “We’re building a ramp,” as each hour passed by.  I’ve also heard, “What time is it Pastor David?” wondering when the next break would come, when we’d be eating, and if we’d have free time at night.  I’ve witnessed teamwork and individual efforts that have been remarkable.  What a joy it was to finish our two projects today, to share in a strong sense of accomplishment and exchanging stories with our fellow teammates as they reviewed their progress and how they completed the task before them.  Sharing our celebration with the families we’ve been working with, praying with them and offering them prayer shawls and love bears.  Now we turn to a new project tomorrow (Thursday) as one full team.  It will be exciting to see how our new skills will come together.  I wonder if that’s what God witnesses as he watches us as a people of faith – coming together, sharing our talents and gifts, engaging our hearts together as one for a common purpose.

There have been so many holy moments this week.  I pray the youth and adults will share their stories on the blog and beyond, proclaiming the good news of what God is doing here in this unique community.  We learned tonight from Pastor Harold Salmon (Trinity UMC) that Robeson County is a tri-racial community:  Native Americans, African Americans, and Caucasian.  (Recent statistics show the percentages are in this order.)  Our first two ramps were completed  for a Native American woman and a Caucasian woman, and tomorrow we will begin work with an African American family.  What a joy to serve within this special community, where hospitality continues to be so evident in all the places we’ve been.

Looking forward to another day, where we will continue to seek holy places, to share laughter together, and the very rewarding work of putting our hearts together as one.  Is that not what we pray for during the celebration of the Lord’s Supper?  To be the body of Christ for the world…  Praying the Lord will continue to provide just that in our continued work and mission.  As you continue to follow us on the blog, I’d encourage you to seek the holy places in your day.

Thanks for your prayers and thanks for the privilege of serving with such an outstanding group of young people.
David

Day 2 – Ms Dawn

Posted by mzyfgrandy on June 24, 2009

I have found a new way to serve and it doesn’t involve the kitchen.  I have informed Mike he has to find someone new to help in the kitchen because I have discovered the pneumatic nail gun and it is incredible.  I overcame my fear of power tools and got busy nailing down the deck boards on the ramp.  I had my doubts when we left Grandy how the 17 of us with little to no knowledge of building could build ramps, but I have once again been reminded that with God’s help all things are possible.  To see the two finished ramps and to know that we were able to do this work with the guidance of a special servant of God in Jim Kennedy.  We are excited to start tomorrow as one big team working together on a larger ramp.  It has been an amazing day for work and fellowship and sharing in fellowship with another Methodist youth group of truly wonderful kids.  We are so blessed to be allowed to work with such great youth. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we work for God.

Posted by mzyfgrandy on June 24, 2009

OMG! I have survived two full days.  yesterday we started out on one ramp and then started a new one.  Today we finished the second one while the other group finished the first one.  Mr. Jack and Jim our manager keep on trying to out humor each other and they are pretty good at it!  Sorry I didn’t gblog again tomorrow but for now et to blog last night but I didn’t have enough time.  Tonight we had a pizza party and one I of the lady’s made dirt cake!!  We then had a devotion after dinner and talked about Robeson County and our county. We also got to meet the Trinity youth group today .  By the way I love youth group!!!  Tomorrow we have to make a ramp twice as long as the one we finished today.  There is so much more to type about, but I can’t stay up forever.  Oh, by the way we get to sleep in until 7:45 tomorrow!!  I have got to get my rest so if possible I might blog again tomorrow.  C-ya
